Twelve county offices up for election

Published December 5, 2009

Val Verde County's next political season is underway.

Thursday was the first day for candidates to file for positions on the ballots for the March 2010 Primary Election.

Twelve county offices are up for election in 2010: county judge, county court-at-law judge, district clerk, county clerk, county treasurer, county surveyor, county commissioner Precinct 2, county commissioner Precinct 4, justice of the peace Precinct 1, justice of the peace Precinct 2, justice of the peace Precinct 3 and justice of the peace Precinct 4.

Val Verde County Clerk Janie Ramon, who has been handing out a steady supply of information packets she has created for prospective candidates for county office, said candidates must file their actual applications for places on the ballot with either the Democratic Party chair or with the Republican Party chair.

Ramon, who will herself seek re-election to the county clerk's seat in 2010, said she provides the packets as a courtesy to potential candidates, and said although the packets are chock-full of important information for candidates to know, she encourages all candidates to visit with the county chairs of their respective parties.

Val Verde County Democratic Party Diana Salgado said as of Friday afternoon four persons have filed applications for places on the March primary election ballot.

“Filing opened at 12:01 a.m. (Thursday), but we didn't have any takers at that hour,” Salgado said Friday.

She said Mike L. Fernandez, the incumbent county judge, and Roy Musquiz, the incumbent county commissioner in Precinct 2, filed their applications about 8 a.m. Thursday.

Salgado said Fernandez and Musquiz were followed in quick succession by James Fernandez, who has filed for a place on ballot to run for justice of the peace precinct 4, and by Al Padilla, who has filed an application to run for justice of the peace precinct 3.

Val Verde County Republican Party Chair Anna Chapman said she had received only one formal application for a place on the March ballot as of Friday evening.

Chapman said Bill Babb has filed his application to run for the office of justice of the peace Precinct 3.

The deadline to file an application for a place on the ballot is 6 p.m. Monday, Jan. 4.
