Sheriff fires Oscar Gonzalez

Val Verde County Sheriff Joe Frank Martinez today confirmed he has terminated the employment of Oscar Gonzalez as one of his two chief deputies.
“There are certain issues that came up, and I was not happy with the direction that the division was headed in, so I made a decision that we're going to make some changes there and take a new direction. I know where we want to be, and that's where I want to get to,” Martinez told the Del Rio News-Herald in a short interview at the newspaper office this morning.
He added, “That job was not getting done. I have a vision of where I want to be and I feel that we were not headed in that direction.”
Martinez said he terminated Gonzalez's employment with the sheriff's office “about mid-afternoon” Monday. He said the parting was amicable.
Gonzalez was named the chief deputy/administration for the Val Verde County Sheriff's Office shortly after Martinez was sworn as the county sheriff in January.
Gonzalez, a native Del Rioan, came to the sheriff's office from the Val Verde County Attorney's Office, where he had served as the county attorney's investigator.
Gonzalez also served for several years as the county's appointed sheriff.
Gonzalez, contacted by phone said, “I've enjoyed being at the sheriff's office and working with the staff there, and I will help the sheriff with anything I can in the future.”
Martinez said he hopes to replace Gonzalez in the chief deputy position.
As chief deputy/administration, Gonzalez was responsible for the sheriff's office warrants, transports, civil process and finance divisions.
“I wish Oscar well in his future endeavors,” Martinez said.
