Principal Carlos Rios leaves Del Rio district

Published October 21, 2009

Del Rio Middle School Principal Carlos Rios is leaving the district.

After four years as leader of the campus, Rios is taking an administration job with Laredo Independent School District.

Though the move is strategic to his career, Rios said it was not made lightly.

“This is my hometown, so it wasn't an easy decision…Del Rio is always going to be home and that's not going to change,” said Rios this morning. “But, for the sake of advancement in my career, I'll have to make some difficult moves.”

He said his decision was made slightly easier by the fact that the school has seen great strides on state accountability measures under his watch, and he's confident staff at the campus will continue to be successful even after he is gone.

“The instructional team here made some profound changes that really impacted learning,” said Rios. “I have to give special thanks to all of the department heads who have served. It was their ability to provide instructional leadership that contributed to the gains while I was here.”

San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District Superintendent Kelt Cooper said this morning he was disappointed to see Rios leave, but understands the move.

“He's been a good principal, he's solid. He's done really well for our district and I anticipate he will have a district of his own one day,” said Cooper.

Cooper said Rios' ability to coordinate with principals at the sixth grade and Del Rio High School helped create streamlined curriculum and an education model that has served students well.

Rios also introduced the co-teach model to the school, as well as the houses and pods student grouping system.

“From a career standpoint, I'm very proud for him,” said Cooper. “This is an opportunity that will open big doors for him in a short time.”

Cooper agrees middle school staff will continue to see success, noting that the school is on the brink of being named a recognized campus based on state accountability standards.

“I am very confident in the staff at that school,” said Cooper. “That school will stay on the straight course to recognition.”

Rios is taking a job as the executive director of academic compliance and accountability. His last day at the middle school will be Friday, Oct. 30.
