Axochitzin Valentina Abrego
As the sound of the rushing waters of the San Felipe Creek echoed and the sweet smell of burning copal (tree sap incense) filled the air, Axochitzin Valentina Abrego entered into her fifteenth year of life with the blessings of God and a traditional Azteca-Mexica ceremony. The ceremony was beautiful as Axochitzin was presented to the four corners of the earth and ending in the center of a circle which was formed by members of the danza group Xinachtli, parents Raul and Diana Abrego, friends, and family. To the East corner, uncle Mario Abrego, brothers Joaquin and Angel Abrego and cousin John Abrego III, presented the Quinceañera with gifts, advice and well wishes. To the South, grandparents Juan and Lupe Abrego placed a crown of fresh white flowers on her head. Along with Aurelio Martinez they offered her advice and prayer. The sun’s rays beamed down on Axochitzin that afternoon as to the West aunts, Irma Hernandez, Raquel Martinez, Olga Abrego, Rachel Ortiz, and Sarah Abrego presented gifts, prayers, advice and scripture.
To the North, flower petals were sprinkled over Axochitzin by her cousins and friends, as some of them gave her words of love and encouragement. Gathered in the center, Axochitzin along with her parents, accompanied Grupo Danza Azteca Xinachtli in a song of thanksgiving to God. As the music played and the voices were lifted up, Axochitzin danced her first danza not as a little girl but as a young lady.
After a very emotional ceremony, a celebration was held at the Del Rio Civic Center. Axochitzin and her escort Cuauhtli Rojas arrived in style in a line of lowrider cars. Damas and escorts were fierce in their zoot suits and dresses as they did a non traditional waltz. The evening was filled with music, dancing, food, fun and laughter and special moments such as the father/daughter dance and the presentation of her last doll.
Axochitzin, Raul and Diana Abrego would like to thank everyone for their presence at the ceremony and celebration. Thank you for the wishes, prayers, advice and gifts. Thank you to all the family and friends who helped make this day happen. Last but not least thank you to the court of honor and the dance instructors, Claudia Garcia and Itzel Guerrero who made my Quinceañera dreams come true!
