Rams use long ball to stop Mavericks
Published March 10, 2010
Del Rio’s district schedule began with a bang.
Humberto Barrera led off the Rams’ first at-bat of the game with a home run, one of three the team would hit on the evening, as Del Rio defeated the Eagle Pass C.C. Winn Mavericks 7-1.
The win moves the Rams to 7-3 on the season and 1-0 in District 29-5A.
Barrera’s home run helped bolster David Gomez’s strong pitching performance as the senior hurler picked up the complete game win. He allowed one run on five hits and one walk while striking out 11.
Gomez also helped lead the Rams’ offense as he went 3-for-3 with two singles and a solo home run while driving in a pair of runs.
Del Rio struck for a pair of runs in the bottom of the first inning.
Barrera got things started when he drove the fourth pitch of the at-bat over the left centerfield wall at Roosevelt Park to put the Rams up 1-0.
After a Josue Aldrete strike out, Richard Hernandez singled to left field. He moved to second base on a passed ball and then took third on an error by Winn shortstop Juan Del Bosque on a ball hit by Carson Hill. Gomez then smacked a single to left field to drive in Hernandez and push the lead to 2-0.
The Rams picked up three more runs in the bottom of the second inning to up their lead to 5-0.
Adrian Guajardo hit a one-out single to right field. When right fielder Xavier Lopez charged in to make a play on the ball, it skipped under his glove and rolled to the wall. Guajardo never stopped running and by the time the ball came back to the infield he was standing on third base.
Barrera followed Guajardo’s hit with a walk. Aldrete then cleared the bases as he drove a pitch from Winn starter Jose Rendon over the centerfield wall for a three-run home run and a 5-0 Del Rio lead.
Aldrete was the last batter Rendon would face as he was lifted for Thomas De La Cruz. De La Cruz did his job early on, striking out three of the first four batters he faced.
While Del Rio’s bats were on target, Winn had no solution for Gomez.
Gomez allowed a single in the first inning and the fourth inning and didn’t allow a runner to reach second base until the fifth inning when Angel Valdez doubled to right field. He also struck out eight batters through the first four innings.
The Rams picked up their sixth run of the game in the bottom of the fourth.
Guajardo led off with a walk and then proceeded to steal second and third base. Two batters later, Hernandez ripped a single to left field and brought Guajardo home to up the Rams’ lead to 6-0.
Del Rio’s final run came in the fifth inning.
Gomez led off Del Rio’s half of the inning and drove the first pitch he saw from De La Cruz over the left field wall and off the light pole to put the Rams ahead 7-0.
Eagle Pass’ only run came in the sixth inning.
Thomas De La Cruz reached base on a fielder’s choice and was replaced on base by courtesy runner Jose Villarreal. A single by Jose De La Cruz put runners on first and second base, but they soon moved up to second and third base when Gomez’s pickoff attempt at second base bounced into centerfield.
Villarreal would eventually score on a passed ball to cut the Del Rio lead to 7-1, but the Rams closed out the threat with a Gomez to Hill to Diego Cadena double play.
As a team Del Rio pounded out 10 hits. Hernandez finished the game 3-for-4 with three singles, a run scored and an RBI. Tino Pruneda was 1-for-1 for the Rams with a single off the bench.
Del Rio travels to San Antonio this weekend for the South San Tournament beginning Thursday.
The Rams’ next home game will be Tuesday, March 16, as they host the Eagle Pass High Eagles at Roosevelt Park at 7:30 p.m.
