UIL decides to keep Del Rio in 29-5A

Published February 1, 2010

Del Rio is staying in District 29-5A at least for the next two years.

The state’s University Interscholastic League released its bi-annual realignment list this morning and Del Rio High School, which was rumored to be moving out of its current district, was listed along with nine other schools in the new District 29-5A.

Joining Del Rio will be Eagle Pass High, Eagle Pass C.C. Winn, Laredo Alexander, Laredo Cigarroa, Laredo Johnson, Laredo Martin, Laredo Nixon, Laredo United and Laredo United South.

Former district foe San Antonio Southwest was moved into District 28-5A along with Corpus Christi Carroll, Corpus Christi King, San Antonio East Central, San Antonio Highlands and South San Antonio.

Early reports indicated that Del Rio would be returning to San Antonio and possibly joining Southwest in which ever district it wound up in. District 28-5A seemed the most logical fit, based on its proximity to Del Rio and its room for growth, but instead Del Rio will remain alongside schools from Laredo and Eagle Pass as it did during much of the 1990’s.

Del Rio returned to District 29, more commonly referred to as the Laredo district, in 2008 after more than a decade of competing in District 27-5A alongside schools from San Antonio’s Northside ISD.

Since moving to 29-5A, Del Rio has qualified for the playoffs in football and basketball and has won district titles in cross-country, soccer, golf and track and field.

Cigarroa, Nixon and Johnson were part of 29-5A prior to 2008 but were reclassified as 4A schools following the 2007-08 school year based on enrollment. The schools petitioned to rejoin the district after the 2008 realignment was announced but the appeal was denied.

Del Rio isn’t the only area school to see its district undergo a change.

Brackett High School in Brackettville will compete in two districts for football and basketball.

For football purposes, Brackett moves from District 30-1A into Division I, District 14-1A. They’ll join Center Point, Johnson City and La Pryor.

Come basketball season, Brackett returns to Division I, 30-1A along with Charlotte, La Pryor, Sabinal and San Antonio Gervin.

Comstock will compete in Division II, District 31-1A along with Barksdale Nueces Canyon, D’Hanis, Knippa, Leakey, Rocksprings and Utopia.

These realignment changes will not take affect until the 2010-2011 school year.
