County selects librarian

Published October 15, 2009

Christopher R. Kuechmann has been named the new county librarian.

Kuechmann, who currently lives in Ponchatoula, La., and who most recently served as the library director for the Tangipahoa Parish Library System in Amite, La., was voted into the position during the October regular term meeting of Val Verde County Commissioners Court Monday.

County Judge Mike L. Fernandez said Kuechmann was one of three finalists who were interviewed for the county librarian position. Fernandez said Monday the county received a total of seven applicants for the librarian position.

Fernandez said the top three applicants were selected based “on certification and experience.”

Fernandez said Kuechmann has worked as a librarian in Edinburg and in Rio Grande City. According to Kuechmann's resume, which was released by the county judge's office following Monday's meeting, the new county librarian served the city of Edinburg as its children's and public relations librarian from 1985 to 1990 and as its library director from 1991 to 1998. He served as the library director of Starr County in Rio Grande City from 1990 to 1991.

County Commissioner Precinct 1 Ramiro Ramon noted that two committees interviewed the top three applicants.

He said the first committee consisted of County Commissioner Precinct 1 Roy Musquiz, Fernandez, Irma Henderson, the county's interim librarian, and Otila Gonzalez, the county judge's administrative assistant.

Ramon said the second interview committee included himself, County Commissioner Precinct 3 Beau Nettleton and library staff member Rosa Martinez.

“Mr. Kuechmann has worked in the (Rio Grande) Valley. He is married to a Texan, a Valley girl, and he's very much looking forward to coming in. He's very knowledgeable. The library staff did meet him. They were very happy, very pleased with him, so I feel very comfortable in making this motion for acceptance,” Ramon said.

Before the court voted Fernandez added, “We based our interviews on the requirements of the librarian. This gentleman has a master of library science and, as far as experience, quite a few years of being a librarian. . . We feel that he is the best qualified out of the three that we interviewed.”

In addition to his work in the Rio Grande Valley, Kuechmann, according to his resume, has served as library director for the Matteson Public Library in Matteson, Ill.; as library director of the Ohio Township Public Library System in Newburgh, Ind.; and as regional library administrator for the city of Clewiston in Clewiston, Fla.
