SRSU looking for new president

Sul Ross State University will not “force a fit” when selecting a new president.

“We will not make a decision in haste. We will not force a fit that does not work,” Dr. Kenneth Craycraft, vice chancellor for academic affairs for the Texas State University System, said Monday.

Craycraft met with local community leaders and staff from Sul Ross State University-Rio Grande College to answer questions about the search for a new president.

After 19 years with Sul Ross, Dr. R. Vic Morgan announced his retirement, prompting a nation-wide search for a new leader.

Craycraft said to-date, 27 individuals have expressed interest in the position, but was quick to add that not just any candidate will do.

“We are looking for someone who is as passionate about this region as you are,” said Craycraft, noting the challenges ahead. “It is tough to replace a leader of 19 years. The average nationwide tenure is five years.”

He said a 15-member committee, including top educators, has been established to assist with the search. He said that committee would look at all the candidates and determine who will make the final list.

Once the finalists are chosen, Craycraft said the applicants would visit the Sul Ross campuses, likely starting in Del Rio because they can fly into the international airport.

From here, the candidates will drive to the surrounding campuses in Eagle Pass, Uvalde and Alpine, said Craycraft.

Val Verde County Commissioner Precinct 2 Roy Musquiz, who attended Monday’s meeting, questioned when Del Rio’s campus would grow.

Musquiz, who obtained his master’s degree through Sul Ross, recalls carpooling to the Alpine campus in the 70s.

Today, many students at the college must attend courses at other sites.

“This is still a problem for many students who have to travel for a three-hour course,” said Musquiz.

Craycraft said those are issues the new president should address, possibly looking into online courses as an option.
