Student pilots leaving their mark on Del Rio

Published June 23, 2010

As a gift to their instructors, a group of student pilots from Laughlin Air Force Base are leaving their mark on Del Rio. During Tuesday’s night’s city council meeting, council members approved the request to paint a logo on a local storage water tank.

The request was made by members of the 84th Flying Training squadron, known as the Hawgs.

Student pilot Patrick Warfel who attended Tuesday’s meeting, said the work on the logo may be started as early as this weekend.

He explained the water storage tank, which is located on Hamilton Lane, is used as a visible navigation reference for the pilots in training.

The city requested that participants must sign a release of liability in favor of the city prior to gaining access to the tank.

The logo will be of no cost the city, and will only be visible from the air.

The city also requested the paint to be within American Water Works Association (AWWA) standards. Warfel said the logo will be a large red H to represent the squadron.

Future T-6 fighting squadron classes will be responsible for maintaining the logo as needed.
