It's good to know who your friends are

The reports of my demise were greatly exaggerated, but man was I in a lot of pain.

Friday morning I awoke with all the intention of writing another Rams football preview, going home to take a nap and then waking up to drive to San Antonio and stand alongside our Rams as they battled the Clark Cougars for a spot in the Class 5A, Division I Region IV Finals.

But my body had other plans and those started around 8 a.m.

That’s when the first pain hit me. While I won’t go into great detail about where it started, I can tell you it was something I’d never felt before. After an hour of dealing with it I decided I needed to go to the hospital and my co-worker Karen Gleason did the good deed of driving me there.

I remained in the Val Verde Regional Medical Center for the next three hours or so, undergoing tests and being given pain pills to ease my discomfort. The diagnosis was kidney stones, and that was the best diagnosis the staff there could have given me considering the other opinions floating around.

The recommendation was for me to take pain pills for discomfort and drink lots of water in order to flush said stone out of my body. Because of those stipulations, and the fact that there is no available bathroom on the sidelines of the Alamodome, I decided it was in my best interest to stay home.

Luckily for me I had an excellent support staff ready to take up my slack. Co-worker Jennifer Killin, who was actually on vacation last week, came in to do Saturday’s sports page Friday night. James Boogaard, who’d been helping me with my stats for the past few months, and Joel Langton kept me updated via telephone.

As for the game itself, I listened to the action on KTDR Power 96.3 FM as it was broadcast by David Ritchie, Rowland Garza and Danny Flores. I later found out I could have watched the game online, but I found solace in sitting in bed and just listening to it.

All that rest and water must have worked because Saturday I passed the stone and the worst, for now, appears over. If you’ve never had kidney stones, consider yourself lucky. It’s a pain you won’t soon forget.

I just want to take this time to thank everyone who kept me in their thoughts throughout the weekend. Your phone calls and Facebook posts made me realize that I’m a far luckier man than I could have ever imagined.

Some of the biggest thanks go out to my family, of course, and to Karen, Jennifer, my managing editor Rosa Delgado and all my co-workers at the News-Herald for coming together and ensuring there would still be some local sports available for our readers.

I also want to pass along my thanks to Larry Pope, for being there at the hospital and checking up on me Saturday, and Rams head coach Steve Hoffman for calling me at home Saturday to see how I was doing. You guys didn’t have to do that, but you did and I greatly appreciate it.

As of today I’m feeling a whole lot better and following the doctor’s advice. Hopefully I won’t have to go through that again.

With football season over, it’s time to look ahead to basketball season.

The Rams and the Queens basketball teams have already played a few games this season but only two of those games have come at home.

Tuesday night the Rams will host the Laredo Cigarroa Toros. The freshmen and junior varsity team will play at 5:30 p.m. in the old gym and Carl Guys Gym respectively. The varsity team takes the court at 7 p.m. at the Carl P. Guys Memorial Gymnasium.

No word on how many of the Rams football team will be on the basketball team, but Josh Washington, John Steed, Weston Morgan and Max Ponce all played basketball last year and word has it that Jeff McDaniels is expected to suit up as well.

I hope to see as many fans as possible out there tomorrow night.

Finally, with Del Rio’s loss to Clark the District 29-5A All-District team can be made available to the public.

I will delay publishing the list until this Sunday to ensure I have photos of every one of our recognized players, and from what I’ve been told there’s a lot of them. So I ask for fans and parents to please be patient.
