Democratic Party Forum Friday
Published February 15, 2010
The public is invited to meet Democratic candidates for area offices in a forum set for Friday by the Val Verde County Democratic Party.
The forum is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. Friday, Feb. 19, in the Kennedy Room at the Del Rio Civic Center, 1915 Veterans Blvd.
Val Verde County Democratic Party Chair Diana Salgado said all of the candidates who will be on the ballot for area offices in the March 2 Democratic Party Primary Election have been invited to participate.
Salgado said each of the candidates attending Friday’s forum will be given three minutes to introduce himself or herself and to state his or her position on the issues to those attending.
There will be no formal question-and-answer session at the end of the candidates’ presentations, but the public is invited to stay and meet with the candidates one-on-one following the forum, Salgado said.
“People need to hear from the candidates what they propose to do, and people need to be informed. They need to know something about the people that are representing them,” said Salgado.
Among the candidates who have been invited to participate in the forum are Ciro D. Rodriguez, the incumbent U.S. Representative, District 23, and Pete P. Gallego, the incumbent Texas Representative, District 74.
Both Rodriguez and Gallego will face Republican opponents in November.
Also invited to meet voters is Luz Clara “Clarita” Balderas, the incumbent District Clerk. Balderas is unopposed in the March 2 Democratic Party Primary Election, but faces Republican challenger Alma Flores in the November General Election.
Also invited to meet Val Verde County voters during the forum are the incumbent County Court-At-Law Judge Sergio Gonzalez and the incumbent Val Verde County Judge Mike L. Fernandez.
Gonzalez is unopposed in his re-election bid, but Fernandez will have a Republican opponent in the November General Election. Fernandez will face the winner of a contest between Laura Allen and Dr. Robert C. Overfelt. That contest will be decided during the March 2 Republican Party Primary Election.
Also invited to meet the public during Friday’s forum are the four men vying for two seats on the Val Verde County Commissioners Court.
Rogelio “Roy” Musquiz, the incumbent Val Verde County Commissioner Precinct 2, and his challenger, Lewis Owens, as well as Jesus “Cheo” Ortiz, the incumbent Val Verde County Commissioner Precinct 4, and his challenger, Gustavo “Gus” Flores, have all been invited to attend the event, Salgado said.
Musquiz and Owens and Ortiz and Flores will square off in the March 2 Democratic Party Primary Election. The winners of those two contests are unopposed in the November General Election.
Salgado said a handful of Democrats who are unopposed in their bids for re-election to the seats they currently hold have also been invited to the forum. They are Val Verde County Clerk Generosa “Janie” Ramon, Val Verde County Treasurer Morris Taylor, Val Verde County Surveyor Abner Martinez, Justice of the Peace Precinct 1 Jim Bob Barrera and Justice of the Peace Precinct 2 Joey Gonzalez.
Seven Democrats seeking two other justice of the peace positions also have been invited to attend the forum.
Rebekah “Becky” Luna Chavez, Deborah Darden, Santiago Hyslop, Raymond Meza and Al Padilla are all seeking the position of Justice of the Peace Precinct 3. The five candidates will face each other in the March 2 Democratic Party Primary Election, and the winner of that race will face the winner of a contest between Republicans Bill Babb and Pat Cole in the November General Election.
Aaron Rodriguez, the incumbent Justice of the Peace Precinct 4, and challenger James Fernandez will face each other for the seat in the primary election. The winner of that contest is unopposed in November.
