Saturday first day to file for city elections

Saturday is the first day to file for a place on the ballot for the city election on May 8.

City Secretary Susan Corp said today that the first day to file is Saturday, Feb. 6, and prospective candidates may turn in their applications beginning at 8 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 6.

Four seats on the seven-seat Del Rio City Council are up for grabs. Those positions include that of mayor, councilperson-at-large, Place C; councilperson District I; and councilperson District II.

The position of mayor is currently held by Efrain Valdez; the position of councilperson-at-large, Place C is currently held by Claudio Sotelo; the position of councilperson District I is currently held by Lisa Cadena Craig; and the position of councilperson District II is currently held by Pat Cole.

The deadline for candidates to file for a place on the city election ballot is 5 p.m. Monday, March 8.

Corp said today she has prepared books with “all the forms” that prospective candidates need to fill out. Those books can be picked up in Corp’s office in City Hall, 109 W. Broadway St., during business hours, 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday.

The May 8 city election to seat those four members of the city council will also include a special election to ask the voters to consider two propositions to changes portions of the city charter dealing with the city’s recall election procedures.

Early voting in the city election will begin at 8 a.m. Monday, April 26, and will end at 5 p.m. Tuesday, May 4. Persons who want to vote early in the city election may do so at the city secretary’s office inside City Hall, 109 W. Broadway St.

One the last two days of the early voting period, City Hall will be open from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m., as per state election law, Corp said.

Persons who wait until election day to cast their ballots can do so from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, May 8, at the following polling locations:

• Precinct 1 – City Hall, 109 W. Broadway St. (Includes all registered voters in Council District I)

• Precinct 2 – Del Rio Civic Center, 1915 Veterans Blvd. (Includes all registered voters in Council District II.)

• Precinct 3 – Philip A. Ricks Gymnasium (formerly known as the San Felipe Middle School Gymnasium), 800 Waters Ave.
