Ramon wins Last Man Standing title

Published January 6, 2010

Jim Sutton made it close, but in the end he just couldn’t catch Albert Ramon.

Ramon’s team ramon made history this year as he became the first No. 1 seed to win the Del Rio News-Herald’s Last Man Standing Fantasy Football League with a win over No. 2 seed Sutton and his squad, THE A TEAM.

Ramon held a 39-point lead over Sutton after the first week of competition between the two men but nearly lost it all the second week.

He benched usual starting quarterback Tom Brady in favor of Miami’s Chad Henne and switched one Arizona wide receiver, Anquan Boldin, for another, Steve Breaston.

The moves didn’t pay off as he’d hoped as Henne left his final game of the year early with an eye injury and Breaston wound up with three catches for 16 yards. Combined they accounted for 27 points while Boldin and Brady wound up with 29 points.

But it was the three-headed beast of Cleveland’s Jerome Harrison, New York Jets Thomas Jones and Philadelphia’s Brent Celek that led Ramon to the win as the trio racked up 46 points and helped right the ship.

Sutton scrapped his lineup after falling behind by 39 and the moves paid off.

San Francisco’s Alex Smith got him 32 points, Chicago’s Devin Aromashodu continued his hot streak as he racked up 19 points, and Jabar Gaffney exploded for 34 points after a 14 catch, 213-yard day.

Six of Sutton’s starters scored in double digits in the last week of play and took a big chunk out of Ramon’s lead. But Sutton’s chances for the win sank when San Diego’s Darren Sproles finished the week with only 18 rushing yards and zero points.

In the end, Ramon wound up winning the title by three points, 228 to 225.

The remaining teams in the league were ranked by how they fared in the five-week playoffs. Teams were seeded based on their points accumulated during the 12-week regular season.
