Empowering Women

Published March 21, 2010

The Women’s Day Conference keynote speaker Saturday morning was Petra Mata. Described by Diana Abrego, organizer of the event, as a strong woman, Mata shared her encouraging words of empowerment with local women.

Mata is the founding member of Fuerza Unida based in San Antonio, and she currently serves as the organization’s acting director and coordinator.

Mata educates workers’ rights for women by answering their questions. She also coordinates meetings and fundraisers for the non-profit organization.

Mata has worked for the Levi Strauss Company for 14 years as a sewing machine operator, utility and supervisor. She supervised more than 30 employees and enforced all company safety rules and regulations. She speaks with organizations and women throughout the U.S. looking for advice about situations in the workplace.

Fuerza Unida is celebrating 20 years of helping women find their voice.
