Queens soccer season comes to an end
Published March 22, 2006
The seniors on the Queens varsity soccer team were hoping for a better send off.
Tuesday night, the Taft Lady Raiders handed the Queens a 3-2 loss. It was Del Rio’s fifth straight loss and leaves the Queens with a final District 27-5A record of 4-9-1 and a season record of 9-13-1.
Things started off badly for Del Rio as Taft picked up its first goal less than a minute into the game. Del Rio goalie Brooke Powell was able to block the Lady Raiders’ shot, but the ball trickled away from her and straight to another Taft players, who promptly put it into the goal.
About eight minutes later, the Lady Raiders struck again.
This time, the Lady Raiders evaded the defense of Rachel Alsing and beat Powell to the far side of the goal to take a 2-0 lead.
Del Rio picked up its first goal of the game, and its first goal in its last 342 minutes of play when Brianda Ojeda took a shot at the goal from about 35 yards out. The ball sailed over the head of the Taft goalie and into the net to trim the lead to 2-1.
With about five seconds remaining in the half, the Lady Raiders grabbed goal No. 3. This time, Del Rio couldn’t clear the throw-in, and Taft was able to muscle the ball past Powell to take a 3-1 lead at halftime.
The second half was a different half for Del Rio.
The Queens’ defense buckled down, keeping Taft from taking any decent shots on goal.
Meanwhile, on offense, Del Rio put the pressure on Taft in an attempt to climb back into the game.
Crystal Hernandez made the first big push, but she was turned back in the 14th minute. Twenty seconds later, Melissa Garcia was able to leap up and head the ball into the net to cut the Lady Raiders’ lead to 3-2.
The defense did its part to keep the game close. The work of Kathy Botello, Nikki Rivas, Cathy Barajas, Jackee Ortega, Hernandez, Sara Cienega, Garcia and Alsing, who was in goal for the second half, kept the Queens in it.
But Taft proved to be too strong on the day, and Del Rio fell by the 3-2 score.
Tuesday’s game was the last home game for seniors Alsing, Chantal Mortezaee, Alisha Cunningham, Sabrina Garcia, Dariela Ramirez, Jessica Velazquez, Barajas, Diana Quintero, Paula Muñoz, Maribel Cardenas and Cienega.
