Elementary meet draws more than 400 runners

Nearly 500 elementary school-aged boys and girls took part in Tuesday’s 8th Annual Del Rio Elementary School Cross-Country Meet sponsored by BBVA Compass Bank.
The event, held at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium, featured area students from fourth grade to sixth grade. A total of 489 students participated and competed on a 1,000-meter course.
Medals were awarded to the top 40 finishers in each division while trophies were presented to the top schools and P.E. teacher’s classes in each division.
The results are as follows (due to space limitations, only the top 10 runners in each division will be listed. Names appear as presented to the News-Herald.):
Fourth Grade Girls Division
Comstock’s Anahi Romo was the top runner in the fourth grade girls division, completing the course in a time of 4:04.24. Lonnie Green Elementary’s Daniela Muñoz was close behind, finishing second in 4:08.51.
The rest of the top 10 included Alex Reyes (3rd, Buena Vista, 4:11.48), Maria Garza (4th, Garfield, 4:20.88), Natalia Rodriguez (5th, Sacred Heart, 4:22.52), Marisa Juarez (6th, Calderon, 4:23.70), V. Ramos (7th, Buena Vista, 4:24.81), K. Perez (8th, Lonnie Green, 4:25.18), I. Gonzalez (9th, Lonnie Green, 4:25.3) and C. Hernandez (10th, Garfield, 4:26.71).
Lonnie Green Elementary won the team trophy with a total of 48 points. Buena Vista Elementary was second with 50 points and Garfield was third with 71 points.
Fourth Grade
Boys Division
In the fourth grade boys division, students from Dr. Lonnie Green Elementary School took the top three spots overall.
A. Meza was first in 3:45.39, H. Marin was second in 3:58.06 and D. Davila was third in 3:59.28.
Joining them in the top 10 were A. Martinez (4th, Garfield, 4:00.85), E. Garcia (5th, Lonnie Green, 4:01.31), B. Hinojosa (6th, North Heights, 4:01.62), A. Cavrero (7th, Garfield, 4:05.12), A. Torres (8th, Garfield, 4:05.64), R. Gonzalez (9th, Lonnie Green, 4:07.52) and J. Dovalina (10th, Lonnie Green, 4:08.71).
The top three finish by Lonnie Green’s runners helped the school earn the first place team trophy with 20 points. Garfield was second with 74 points and Buena Vista was third with 107 points.
Fifth Grade
Girls Division
In the fifth grade girls division, Garfield’s A. Hernandez took first place in a time of 4:07.53.
Second place went to M. Ramon from Sacred Heart in a time of 4:10.09.
Rounding out the top 10 were Dariela Moreno (3rd, Calderon, 4:12.49), D. Flores (4th, Lonnie Green, 4:17.16), A. Chavez (5th, Buena Vista, 4:17.87), M. Rodriguez (6th, St. James, 4:18.45), M. Ortiz (7th, St. James, 4:18.71), A. Davila (8th, Lonnie Green, 4:26.87), C. Flores (9th, Lonnie Green, 4:27.37) and M. Garcia (10th, Garfield, 4:28.66).
St. James won the first place team trophy with a total of 54 points. Lonnie Green was second with 59 points, and Garfield was third with 60 points.
Fifth Grade
Boys Division
St. James’ Mills Cauthorn won the fifth grade boys division in a time of 3:46.15.
Ruben Chavira’s A. Vasquez was second in 3:49.31, and Calderon’s Oswaldo De Leon was third in 3:51.99.
Rounding out the top 10 were G. Montalvo (4th, Lonnie Green, 3:53.81), A. Lopez (5th, Ruben Chavira, 3:53.81), J. Ramon (6th, Garfield, 3:59.86), Orlando Venegas (7th, Calderon, 4:00.89), G. Hernandez (8th, Garfield, 4:03.31), Charles Gambrel (9th, Garfield, 4:05.24), and G. Torres (10th, Lonnie Green, 4:06.77).
Ruben Chavira won the first place team trophy with 52 points. Calderon was second with 69 points, and Garfield was third with 70 points.
Sixth Grade
Girls Division
Runners in the sixth grade divisions represented the coaches of their various P.E. classes.
First place went to A. Hurueta from Durham’s class in a time of 3:56.67. Second place belonged to A. Martinez from Rodriguez’s class in a time of 4:00.71, and third place went to K. Hernandez of Gomez’s class in a time of 4:03.94.
Rounding out the top 10 were D. Villanueva (4th, Durham, 4:04.24), B. Guajardo (5th, Lira, 4:09.09), A. Beltran (6th, Durham, 4:10.02), D. Peña (7th, Rodriguez, 4:10.32), S. Guajardo (8th, Rodriguez, 4:10.80), M. Castañeda (9th, Lira, 4:11.83), and M. Forester (10th, Durham, 4:14.30).
Durham’s class took the first place team trophy with 37 points. Rodriguez’s class was second with 59 points, and Fernandez’s class was third with 83 points.
Sixth Grade
Boys Division
In the sixth grade boys division, L. Segura from Durham’s class was first in a time of 3:34.70. J. Lowe from Rodriguez’s class was second in 3:35.09, and M. Rodriguez from Lira’s class was third in 3:49.36.
Rounding out the top 10 were A. Hernandez (4th, Rodriguez, 3:49.70), R. Barrera (5th, Fernandez, 3:50.01), L. Holguin (6th, Fernandez, 3:50.29), L. Reyes (7th, Suarez, 3:51.21), A. Escamilla (8th, Lira, 3:51.87), J. Davila (9th, Lira, 3:57.63), and M. Hirimdas (10th, Lira, 4:01.03).
Lira’s class took the first place team trophy with 45 points. Rodriguez’s class was second with 62 points, and Fernandez’s class was third with 78 points.
Participation trophies were also presented to the schools, or classes, which had the highest percentage of its students participate in the meet.
Lonnie Green won the big school participation trophy with 36 percent of its students participating. St. James won the small school participation trophy with 89 percent of its students participating. Gomez’s class won the participation trophy for San Felipe Memorial Middle School with 27 percent participation.
