Eighth grade girls pick up two firsts

Del Rio Middle School will need to make room for some more hardware.
The schools eighth grade girls track and field team took first at the recent meets in Carrizo Springs and San Angelo.
The results are as follows:
Carrizo Springs
Leading the way for the team in Carrizo Springs was Clarissa Leon. Leon finished first in three individual events, was part of a first place relay team and took second in a fifth event.
Leon was first in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 15.91. She was also first in the 300-meter hurdles in a time of 49.76 and first in the long jump with a leap of 15 feet, 4 inches. She was second in the high jump after clearing 4 feet, 8 inches.
Her relay gold came in the 1,600 meters as she teamed with Nadia Gonzalez, Kaelyn Martinez and Yolanda Gonzalez to take first in a time of 4:34.18.
Another big finisher was Jhani Jones. She finished in the top six in four events led by a first place finish in the 800-meter relays as she and Martinez, Kaitlin Witt and Gonzalez won in a time of 2:00.42.
Jones was also second in the 300-meter hurdles in 51.90, third in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 6 inches; and fourth in the discus with a throw of 70.40 feet.
Ana Garcia had a first and a second place finish at the meet as she took gold in the 2,400 meters in a time of 10:04.75 and silver in the 1,600 meters in a time of 6:24.06.
Brandi Cardenas also had first and third place finishes as she was first in the 800 meters in a time of 2:44.16 and third in the 1,600 meters in a time of 6:24.77.
Audri Arreola brought home a first and a sixth place finish as she was first in the shot put with a throw of 30 feet, 1 1/2 inches and sixth in the discus with a throw of 66.10 feet.
Other top finishers at the meet included:
Samantha Munderback second in the 2,400 meters in a time of 10:56.28 and fourth in the 1,600 meters in a time of 6:50.87.
Witt second in the triple jump with a leap of 26 feet, 6 inches and sixth in the 400 meters in 1:14.81.
Yolanda Gonzalez second in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 8 1/2 inches.
Nadia Gonzalez third in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 10 inches, fourth in the 300-meter hurdles in 56.20, and fourth in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 4 inches.
Alexia Barrera fourth in the 2,400 meters in 11:00.
Cristela Hernandez fifth in the 400 meters in 1:13.34.
San Angelo
Leon kept up her winning ways in San Angelo.
She earned four more gold medals, including three individual and one as a member of a relay team.
On her own she took first in the long jump with a leap of 14 feet, 4 inches; was first in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 17.55; and first in the 300-meter hurdles in 48.65.
She also team up with Kaelyn Martinez, Nadia Gonzalez and Yolanda Gonzalez to take first in the 1,600-meter relay in a time of 4:24.98.
Her fifth medal was silver as she was second in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, 2 inches.
Arreola recorded a pair of first place finishes as she won the shot put with a throw of 31 feet, 10 1/2 inches and took the discus with a throw of 70 feet, 10 inches.
Garcia was another dual winner as she took first in the 2,400 meters in a time of 10:01.19 and first in the 1,600 meters in a time of 6:13.50.
Martinez and Yolanda Gonzalez brought back another first place relay medal as they teamed with Kelsey Green and Witt to win the 800-meter relay in a time of 2:02.04.
Cardenas was first in the 800 meters in a time of 2:44.91 and was second in the 1,600 meters in 6:15.08.
Other top finishers included:
Munderback second in the 2,400 meters in 10:02 and fifth in the 1,600 meters in 6:33.82.
Green second in the triple jump with a leap of 27 feet, 5 inches, second in the 400-meter relay in 57.00 and fourth in the 200 meters in 31.00.
Nadia Gonzalez second in the 400-meter relay, fourth in the long jump with a distance of 13 feet, 5 inches, fourth in the high jump with a height of 4 feet, and fifth in the 300-meter hurdles in 57.00.
Yolanda Gonzalez second in the 400-meter relay, third in the long jump with a leap of 13 feet, 5 inches, and third in the high jump with a height of 4 feet.
Witt second in the 400-meter relay and fifth in the triple jump.
Mattie Turner third in the triple jump with a leap of 27 feet, 2 inches and fourth in the 100-meter hurdles in a time of 18.78.
Magaly Martinez fourth in the shot put with a throw of 28 feet, 8 inches.
