Motorcycle club commemorated anniversary
Published August 9, 2009
More than 22 engine roaring motorcyclists ambled up Main Street and through our back streets on Saturday, to commemorate the second anniversary since opening their chapter of the Blue Knights Law Enforcement Motorcycle Club – Texas Chapter 37.
But forget the stereotype of a lawless, reckless motorcycle gang — these drivers are active and retired state and federal officers — and they all follow and enforce the law.
“When we get together, we really don’t talk about police work. We talk about our road trips, joke around and talk about motorcycling in general,” said Humberto “Mr. T” Torralba, a Motor Officer with the Eagle Pass police department and the Vice President of the Blue Knights Texas Chapter 37.
Officer Torralba along with ten other officers applied and obtained permission to open the 37th chapter on November 2007. There are 42 chapters in the State of Texas alone. Better yet, today there are over 40,000 Blue Knights in 27 nations across the globe.
“It’s a professional organization . . . it has allowed us to get to know other officers among our surrounding cities,” stated Wesley Wilson, a Del Rio Police Department Motor Officer.
Since the chapter’s existence, they have been able to develop camaraderie among neighboring law enforcement agencies. The group, who now have over 40 members, held their annual meeting at Rudy’s Bar B Q, restaurant and maintained an organized and professional manner.
“The Blue Knights is a family fraternity. Spouses and children often accompany our members to the various rides and functions. When traveling, local members can provide assistance, directions and sometimes a place to stay” stated Hugo Barrera, U. S. Border Patrol, “We are truly a law enforcement family.”
