District hires new deputy superintendent
Published May 11, 2009
The school district has hired Jon C. Orozco as its deputy superintendent.
Orozco received a unanimous vote from the San Felipe Del Rio Consolidated Independent School District Board of Trustees late Friday night after they spent about an hour behind closed doors.
Superintendent Kelt Cooper said Orozco was among 30 applicants for the position. Cooper said a couple of locals already with the district also applied for the job, but declined to release their names.
Most recently Orozco was an elementary principal with the Bandera Independent School District. He has also held the junior high principal position with the San Marcos Independent School District, and two elementary principal jobs with the Judson Independent School District, according to a resume released by the district Friday night.
Orozco also held the position of superintendent of schools from 2004-05 in the Santa Gertrudis Independent School District.
Orozco started his education career in 1993 as a physical education/health teacher with the Southside Independent School District in San Antonio. By 1997 he had moved into leadership roles as an assistant principal in the Pearsall Independent School District.
He earned a bachelor’s degree in exercise and sport science in 1993 from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos and his master’s in administration in 1998 from Texas A&M University in Kingsville.
Orozco later received his superintendent certification in 2000 from Sul Ross State University in Uvalde and is pursuing his doctorate.
Cooper said he was impressed with Orozco’s initiative, noting that the candidate did considerable research on the district before interviewing for the position.
“He studied and researched our district well and when faced with questions he was able to articulate a systematic approach to making changes,” said Cooper following Orozco’s selection. “And he has a track record of improving morale and student achievement.”
Cooper added that he thinks Orozco is enthusiastic and puts the children first when making decisions.
The deputy superintendent position, which was created before Cooper became superintendent, is similar to the assistant superintendent position held by Julio Ramos, who retired in July 2008.
Orozco will oversee curriculum development and other areas including Career and Technology Education, special education, English Language Acquisition and federal programs.
Of the 30 candidates to apply, Cooper said district leaders were able to narrow their search to 11 interviewees, which was then thinned to three finalists.
“We are grateful to have such quality candidates,” said Cooper.
