Pratt sets school record in 5,000 meters
Published February 9, 2010
A former Comstock graduate is setting records at the collegiate level.
Kayla Pratt, whose hometown is listed as Del Rio but who graduated from Comstock High School in 2007, recently broke the University of Texas-San Antonio’s 14-year-old school record for the 5,000 meters when she competed at the New Balance Invitational in New York Friday.
Pratt, a sophomore at UTSA, ran the race in 17:23.21, breaking the previous mark of 17:23.45 set by Meg Harris in 1996.
Her time was also fast enough to give Pratt the college division in the prestigious race that draws the top runners from around the world.
Pratt had a strong 2009 season for the Roadrunners. She was second at the Trinity Opener and the Brazos Valley Open, helping UTSA win the team title at both events. She took first at the Texas A&M-Corpus Christi Relays along with Jessica Bitterly and was second in the 5,000 meters while UTSA again won the team title.
She went on to finish in the top 25 at both the Stanford Invitational in Stanford, Calif.; and the Chili Pepper Festival in Fayetteville, Ark.
Pratt rounded out her year with a second place finish in the 6,000 meters at the Southland Championships in Corpus Christi before finishing 55th in the same event at the NCAA South Central Region Championships in Waco on Nov. 14.
In addition to her success on the track, Pratt has also excelled in the classroom. She was named to the Capital One Bank/Southland Conference Commissioner’s Fall Honor Roll.
Pratt is the daughter of Bill Pratt and Kathy Raabe.
