Comstock sends three to state

Published November 5, 2007

Comstock is sending three of its runners to this weekend’s state cross-country meet.

This past weekend, senior Kayla Pratt, senior Charlie Riley and junior Harmony Pettett finished high enough among all of the competing runners at the Region IV-1A Cross-Country Meet at Brooks City Base in San Antonio to earn state berths.

Pratt reached the state meet by being the first runner to cross the finish line and claiming the Region IV-1A Regional title. She completed the course in a time of 12 minutes, 21 seconds and outran 160 other runners. This will be her third trip to the state meet.

Riley finished ninth in his division in a time of 17 minutes, 53 seconds. There were 165 runners in the boys division. Riley was the lone boys competitor from Comstock.

“I am very happy for Charlie. Reaching the state level, in any sport, is a great accomplishment. He will remember this forever,” head cross-country coach Ruben Ramon said.

Pettett qualified for state by finishing 10th. Her time was 12 minutes, 54 seconds.

Comstock’s girls’ team, which won the district title, finished sixth out of 24 teams at the regional meet.

“I’m very happy for Kayla and Harmony. They have been our leaders all season and it’s great to see their hard work paying off for them,” Ramon said.

Joining Pratt and Pettett were freshman Amanda McCoy, who was 17th in a time of 13:14; freshman Dalia Flores, who was 92nd; freshman Taylor Creamer, who was 94th; sophomore Amanda Gibson, who was 111th and junior Kate Larson, who was 122nd.

“The girls worked extremely hard this year. They set a goal of reaching the state meet as a team. We fell just short, but it gives the kids something to shoot for next year,” Ramon said.

“I’m very proud of all the runners. Cross-Country is a tough sport. These kids worked hard and they never quit. They have helped lay the groundwork for a solid cross-country program in Comstock,” Ramon added.
