Women’s Equality Day

Published September 6, 2009

On Aug. 26, Laughlin Air Force Base’s Club XL had a luncheon to commemorate National Women’s Equality Day which celebrated women’s right to vote.

The program was coordinated by Col. Jeff McDaniel’s, commander of the 47th Flying Training Wing and his many staff members.

The key speaker was Dora G. Alcalá who was the first woman elected mayor of Del Rio from 2000 – 2006. She served as chairwoman of the Texas Border Infrastructure Coalition Transportation Committee, was the recipient of the Distinguished Public Service Award given by the Governor of Mexico.

Alcalá, in the past has worked in many areas of Human Resources including Educational and Equal Employment Opportunity for the United States Air force.

Currently Alcalá is an active board member of Val Verde County Child Welfare, United Way and several other Del Rio organizations. Alcalá credited much success of women’s right to vote to Del Rio natives Irene Cardwell and Rosie Whitehead Jones. Relatives were present and their good friend Leona Lincoln, director of the Whitehead Memorial Museum, and myself had the pleasure of being a part of this celebration.

It was a joyous occasion, food was excellent, and all the staff was really great.

We thank all those who were involve in making this all possible. It was a pleasure to work with Alma Taylor and the rest of the 47th Flying Training Wing Contracting Squadron.
