Spring break means plenty of games to watch
Published March 15, 2010
One of the many things I’ve learned in covering sports is that there is no such thing as a spring break in athletics.
While most teachers and students are enjoying this week off, Del Rio’s coaches, athletic trainers, support staff and student athletes are gearing up for a full slate of games both here and out of town.
Del Rio teams will take part in 10 games over the next five days and that’s only the games scheduled for fields and stadiums in town.
Kicking things off are the junior varsity and varsity Queens softball teams as they’ll host the Laredo United Lady Longhorns today at the Queens Softball Field located near Walter Levermann Ram Stadium. The J.V. team will play at noon and the varsity team will play at 2 p.m.
Tuesday afternoon the Queens junior varsity and varsity soccer teams will conclude their 2009-10 regular season schedule with a game against the Laredo Martin Lady Tigers at Walter Levermann Ram Stadium. If the varsity team wins, they’ll complete their first unbeaten district schedule in team history. The J.V. team takes the pitch at noon with the varsity team following at 1:30 p.m.
Then Tuesday night the Rams varsity baseball team returns to the friendly confines of Roosevelt Park as they host longtime rival Eagle Pass High at 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday afternoon the Rams baseball team will take the field yet again when they take on the San Angelo Lake View Chiefs at 1:30 p.m. at Roosevelt Park.
The Rams freshman and junior varsity baseball teams are in action Thursday as they host Uvalde at Roosevelt Park. The freshmen will play at 1 p.m. followed by the junior varsity team at 3 p.m.
After a day off on Friday, the freshmen and junior varsity Rams baseball teams return to Roosevelt Park to face the Eagle Pass C.C. Winn Mavericks. The freshmen will play at 11 a.m. while the J.V. team plays at 1 p.m.
Of course all of those games are weather permitting, so if you have an in with Mother Nature please ask her to push any and all bad weather to Friday. Thanks in advance.

Okay, this one is for all you fans of men’s college basketball.
The folks at Buffalo Wings and Rings are offering a tournament challenge for everyone who thinks they have what it takes to wade into March Madness and pick the most winners from the field of 65.
First prize in the contest is a $50 gift card from Buffalo Wings and Rings. Second prize is a $25 gift card and third place is a $15 gift card.
All you have to do is go online to games.espn.go.com/tcmen/en/groupfind. From there use the “search” feature to find the group bwr/delrio. Before you can join the group you have to create a free account. Once you’ve done that, use the password “wings” to join the group.
To fill out your bracket, go to the “my entries” tab, click on your log in name, and start putting your best guesses forward.
As of 9:30 this morning there were 14 entries but only half of them had completed their brackets. I did mine in about 15 minutes and while I’m satisfied with my picks, I can honestly admit there’s no real way to do this. You need a combination of luck, gut instinct and prayer to make it all work.
I’ll keep my readers updated as to my status and tell you how bad I’m doing. Of course if I win, you guys won’t hear the end of it. You’ve been forewarned.
