Summer hires boost Laughlin's airpower

Published June 17, 2009

LAUGHLIN AIR FORCE BASE - It's a well known fact employers across the nation boost their manpower during the summer months to handle the busy season, and the Air Force is no exception.

This year Laughlin was flooded with nearly 300 applications from base and community members all wanting to help during Laughlin's busy summer.

In order to apply, the applicants were required to be a high school or college student and at least 16 years of age. Even though each applicant had skills useful to Laughlin, only 140 could be selected for employment.

"This has been a record-breaking year for our Summer Hire Program, not only in the number of applications received but in the number of students hired," said Rosemary Capozziello, 47th Force Support Squadron, manpower and personnel flight chief. "This is a great community outreach program; it allows us to provide gainful summer employment for students at Laughlin and surrounding communities - Del Rio, Brackettville, Quemado, Comstock, and Eagle Pass."

The new Team XL members began working here June 8 in various areas throughout the base from maintenance to manpower and will be here until their term expires Aug. 15.

Most summer hires are scheduled to work 20 hours a week, with a few scheduled to work 40 hours.

"Both my father and cousin work here on base and I'm excited to join them," said Gabriela Vargas, summer hire with the 47th Flying Training Wing public affairs office.

During the 10 weeks they will contribute to the Laughlin mission and learn about the various offices and shops they have been assigned to.

"It definitely connects younger generations with the military and gives us the opportunity to see how things work around a military base," said John Campbell Jr. who will be working in the T-6 maintenance A-Cell.

This program has been ongoing since December 1994 when the Office of Personnel Management amended its policy to give students job opportunities on base while they are out of school.

Of the 140 summer hires, 60 were rehired from last summer, 89 have a relative working on base, and some were brand new applicants from the Del Rio community.

"I'm helping around the Manpower, Personnel and Finance building," said Woodrow Morgan, a summer hire and Del Rio High School student with aspirations to become a mechanical engineer. His father is employed here at Laughlin as a T-38 simulator instructor. "The summer hire program really does help Del Rio and Laughlin have a better relationship, a lot of us signed up this year because Laughlin was giving us such a great opportunity to make some extra money and learn about the military."
