Del Rio finishes strong at Seguin

Del Rio’s final cross-country meet before district saw top three finishes for all four local teams.

Del Rio’s varsity and junior varsity teams competed Saturday at the Texas Lutheran Bulldog Invitational Cross-County Meet in Seguin.

The varsity boys’ team finished second to the squad from Boerne Champion. New Braunfels High finished third.

Justin Garcia was Del Rio’s top finisher as he took fifth overall in a time of 16:29.5.

Also competing for the Del Rio boys’ team were Juan Rojas, who was 12th in 17:07; Adriel Govea, who was 13th and finished just a split second behind Govea but whose time was listed at 17:07; John Tijerina, who was 17th in 17:12; Carlos Jimenez, who was 21st in 17:19; David Calderon, who was 23rd in 17:24; and Gilbert Terrazas, who was 54th in 18:20.

Del Rio’s varsity girls’ team also finished second in its division. San Antonio FEAST had the top team while Cibolo Steele took third.

Much like the boys, Del Rio’s top finisher in the varsity girls division took fifth as Candida Chairez was the first local runner across the finish line in 12:16.

Joining Chairez on the varsity girls’ team were Eileen Vargas, who was 12th in 12:29; Vanessa Galindo, who was 13th in 12:30; Annie Garcia, who was 19th in 12:48; Olivia Dominguez, who was 31st in 13:08; Samantha Munderback, who was 32nd in 13:11; and Alejandra Lopez, who was 64th in 13:58.

Del Rio took first in the junior varsity boys division as five of the team’s runners finished among the top 10 runners overall. Reagan J.V. was second followed by Kyle Lehuan High.

Leading the way was Del Rio’s Jose Gonzalez as he was first overall in a time of 18:03.

Also finishing in the top 10 were Isaac Treviño, who was second in 18:11; Julio Cruz, who was fourth in 18:25; Fabian Tarrango, who was fifth in 18:26; and Abel Cordova, who was 10th in 18:55.

Also competing for the junior varsity boys’ team were Ariel Cordova, who was 11th in 18:57, and Jose Jaramillo, who was 16th in 19:12.

Del Rio’s junior varsity girls’ team finished third in its division behind Boerne Champion J.V. and FEAST J.V.

Elsa Garza was one of three Del Rio girls to finish in the top 10, taking fourth in a time of 13:40. She was joined in the top 10 by teammates Bianca Renteria, who was sixth in 13:41, and Gloria Ramirez, who was eighth in 13:56.

Also competing for Del Rio’s junior varsity girls’ team were Nadia Ramon, who was 22nd in 14:31; Idalia Mallan, who was 38th in 14:49; Cassie Hughes, who was 42nd in 14:51; and Stephanie Amaya, who was 47th in 15:17.

The District 29-5A Cross-Country Meet will be held Saturday, Oct. 31, at the Del Rio Middle School campus. Del Rio is the defending boys and girls champions.
