Cardenas earns first win for Calderon boxing

Published March 26, 2010

Del Rio’s Doc Calderon Boxing Club has its first win.

Eloy Cardenas Jr., one of the first members of the club, scored a third round knockout of 16-year-old Eliaja Rodriguez of the Atascosa County Boxing Club during a recent series of bouts held in Eagle Pass March 20.

Cardenas, 15, entered the fight unbeaten in his three previous fights as part of the defunct Albino’s Boxing Club.

Despite being older, Rodriguez, who fought out of Poteet, was the smaller of the two fighters.

The bouts were held in Eagle Pass’ International Center for Trade building. Clubs from Del Rio, Eagle Pass, Corpus Christi, San Antonio, Pharr and Poteet took part.

Cardenas was accompanied at the fight by trainers Eloy Cardenas Sr. and Jo Elda Retana and club president Luis Fernandez. He was sponsored by Filimon Ortiz and Simon Sotelo.
