Comstock runners head to regionals
Published November 3, 2009
Comstock’s varsity boys’ cross-country team is headed back to the regional meet.
After a three-year absence, the team finished second at the District 2-1A Cross-Country Meet Oct. 28 at Balmorhea State Park to claim one of the district’s three bids to this weekend’s Region I Meet in Lubbock.
Battling winds throughout the race, the team featured three top 10 finishers. No Comstock runner finished worse than 17th.
The top runner for the school was junior Miguel Moreno. He finished fourth overall.
Joining him in the top 10 were sophomore Christian Fuentez, who placed fifth, and freshman Jeremy Pence, who finished 10th.
Rounding out the Comstock team were freshman Eddie Moreno, who finished 12th; senior James Garetz, who was 13th; freshman Dawson Spencer, who finished 15th; and senior Dillon Wilson, who was 17th.
Comstock’s junior varsity boys’ team also found success, taking first in its division.
Pacing the team was junior Jerry Ramon as he finished second overall.
All eight of Comstock’s runners finished among the top 10 overall. Aside from Ramon, the group included sophomore Asa Allen, who was third; sophomore Jonathan Lunsford, who was fourth; freshman Roland Garcia, who was fifth; junior Michael Fitch, who took sixth; junior Ryan Mejia, who came in eighth; sophomore Ramon Rodriguez, who was ninth; and freshman Brady Sikes, who finished 10th overall.
“The Panthers will return five of the top seven runners next year. That, combined with a strong JV team, should make for another big year for the boys’ cross country team,” coach Ruben Ramon said.
Like the boys, Comstock’s varsity girls’ team also booked a spot in the regional meet with a third place showing.
Amanda McCoy, who defended her title as district champion, led the team.
Joining McCoy were senior Sarah Caron, who finished 10th; sophomore Paola Hernandez, who was 13th; senior Amanda Gibson, who was 19th; sophomore Patti Sunderland, who was 26th; sophomore Arielle Delgado, who was 28th; and senior Julie Johnson, who finished 37th.
Comstock’s junior varsity girls’ team finished second in its division.
The team did feature the girls junior varsity district champion though as Comstock’s Hannah Rosenow finished first among all competitors in the division.
Rounding out the junior varsity girls’ team were Kinsey Wilson, who was fourth; Breanna Jorgensen, who was eighth; Tricia Fitch, who was 10th; Monique DeLaPaz, who was 12th; Mariana Solorio, who was 14th; and Miriam Quintero, who was 27th.
“The Lady Panthers will return four of the top seven runners next year including two-time district champion and state qualifier Amanda McCoy. With a strong crop of incoming freshman, the Lady Panthers should have a very strong team next year,” Ramon said.
Comstock also had several of its junior high boys compete at the meet. Dylan Fitch was fifth followed by Brandon Paglione in 15th and Kurt Pauer in 16th.
“It was great to see all the hard work pay off for our kids,” Ramon said.
The Comstock teams will hit the road Thursday to compete at the Region I Meet Saturday at Mae Simmons Park in Lubbock. The girls will compete at 1 p.m. while the boys run at 1:30.
