Local youth compete in Punt, Pass and Kick
Published September 20, 2009
Eleven young Del Rioans competed Saturday morning for the right to represent Del Rio in the annual NFL Pepsi Punt, Pass and Kick competition.
The free competition, which was held at Camp Del Rio, was open to all youth ages 8 to 15-years.
The winners from this local competition will advance to the area level of competition. The particulars of that event, such as date and location, will be provided to the families by the city of Del Rio Parks and Recreation Department.
In the case of the punt, pass and kick competition, it’s a combination of distance and accuracy that will lead a participant to victory. The three activities, passing a football, punting a football and kicking a football off a stationary tee, guaged the participants’ ability to not only send the ball as far downfield as possible, but as accurately as possible as yardage was subtracted based on how far away the ball landed from the already established line.
Winners in each division were determined by the total yardage racked up by the competitor.
In the 8-9-year-old Division, Mario Humberto Treviño was first with 108 yards. His top distance was 41 yards in the pass.
Second place went to Emilio De Leon with 91 yards including a 37-yard pass. Andres Mena was third with 75 yards and Trini Ramirez was fourth with 69 yards including a group best punt of 33 yards.
In the 10-11-year-old division, Jesse A. Treviño took first with a total of 173 yards. His best event was the punt in which his kick measured 72 yards.
David A. Ritchie was second with 164 yards. He had an even further punt with a 74-yarder. Oswaldo De Leon was third with 139 yards including the top kick in the division with 53 yards. Isaac Bejarano was fourth with 138 yards. He tied Treviño for the top pass in the division at 68 yards.
In the 14-15-year-old division, Wesley A. Ritchie was first with 203 yards. He had the furthest distance in the punt, 90 yards, and the pass, 100 yards.
Benjamin J. Rivera was second with 193 yards, including the top kick of 39 yards, and Ricky Hernandez was third with 157 yards.
