Del Rio teams dominate local meet
Published October 11, 2009
Hundreds of runners from around the region tackled the hills at Del Rio Middle School and competed in the Fourth Annual Del Rio Invitational Cross-Country Meet.
The meet, sponsored by The Bank & Trust, was held Saturday at the school located off U.S. Highway 90 East. Students in fourth grade through high school, and from schools in Class 1A to 5A, competed on the course that took them from the rolling hills near the school’s practice fields to the football stadium and back again.
The event began around 8 a.m. as the earliest runners competed in temperatures hovering in the 50’s. It didn’t deter the competitors, though, as teams from nearby Comstock and Brackettville were joined by teams from as far away as Laredo, Sanderson and Knippa and points in between.
Also competing were Del Rio’s team including the seventh and eighth grade teams from Del Rio Middle School and the junior varsity and varsity teams from Del Rio High School.
The meet concluded with the alumni race. The two-mile race featured former Del Rio students, and at least one parent of a Del Rio runner, from various graduated classes.
The following are the results in the small school/junior varsity boys and girls divisions, the Class 4A/5A boys and girls divisions, and the alumni race. The results from the middle school divisions will be printed at a later date.
