Republican forum Monday

The public is invited to meet Republican candidates for area offices in a forum set for Monday by the Val Verde County Republican Party.

The forum is scheduled to begin at 6:30 p.m. Monday, Feb. 8, in the Sun Blossom Room at Ramada Inn Del Rio, 2101 Veterans Blvd.

Val Verde County Republican Party Chair Anna Chapman said all of the candidates who will be on the ballot for area offices in the March 2 Republican Primary have been invited to participate.

“It’s important for people to attend because they need to be informed of who the candidates are, and the more informed they are, the better decisions they can make on who to vote for,” Chapman said.

Candidates invited to participate in the forum include Laura Allen and Dr. Robert C. Overfelt. Allen and Overfelt will face each other in the March 2 Republican Primary for the seat of Val Verde County Judge. The winner of that contest will go on to face the incumbent Democrat, Mike L. Fernandez, in the November General Election.

Candidates for another contested race, for Justice of the Peace Precinct 3, also will have their chance to meet the public during the forum.

Republican candidates Bill Babb and Pat Cole will square off in the March 2 Republican Primary for voters in Precinct 3. The winner of that election will then face the winner of a five-candidate contest in the Democratic Party Primary Election for the same seat in November.

Voters during the Monday forum also will have the chance to meet Alma L. Flores, who is one of two local candidates who are unopposed in the Republican Party Primary Election. Flores is running for the position of district clerk against her boss, incumbent Democrat Luz Clara “Clarita” Balderas. Flores and Balderas will face each other in the November General Election.

Chapman said the Republican Party forum also will include candidates for U.S. Representative, District 23, a position currently held by Democrat Ciro D. Rodriguez of San Antonio; and Texas Representative, District 74, a position currently held by Democrat Pete P. Gallego of Alpine.

Republican candidates for the U.S. Representative, District 23, seat are Mike Kueber, Francisco (Quico) Canseco, Joseph Mack “Doc” Gould, Will Hurd and Robert (Doc) Lowry, Chapman said.

Republican candidates for the Texas Representative, District 74, seat are Thomas (T.C.) Kincaid Jr. and Yolanda Sotelo Garza.

The only incumbent Republican on the March 2 primary election ballot, 83rd Judicial District Judge Carl Pendergrass of Del Rio, also has been invited to the forum, Chapman said. Pendergrass is unopposed in both the primary and the general election.

Chapman said candidates will be given three minutes to state their positions to the public, and there will be a short question-and-answer session afterward.
