Public meeting for pro team Wednesday
Published July 27, 2010
It looks like the public will get a chance to ask its questions in regards to Del Rio’s chances of receiving an independent professional baseball franchise.
Andrew Dunn, owner of the Las Cruces Vaqueros and commissioner of the Pecos Baseball League, said Monday evening that while he is still planning to meet with a select group of people Wednesday morning, he would like to hold a second meeting open to the public Wednesday afternoon.
The public meeting will be held at 5:30 p.m. in the Ramada Inn’s Sunblossom Room A and is open to anyone who has any questions about the league and Del Rio’s role.
Dunn said he has received a multitude of phone calls in regards to the league and said he’d like the opportunity to answer any questions Del Rioans have about the team that they’re proposed to receive.
“People have been calling and telling me what they think about the team. Some like the name and like the colors. Some hate the name and hate the colors. I’ve heard all kinds of questions and concerns,” Dunn said.
For those persons who would like to see the kind of talent that would be a part of Del Rio’s baseball team, currently known as the Del Rio Bombers, Dunn said he would give tickets to anyone interested in watching the final championship series of the Continental Baseball League. The best-of-three series will be held Thursday, Friday and Saturday at Kokernot Field in Alpine and will feature Dunn’s Vaqueros taking on the Big Bend Cowboys.
The Cowboys feature former Del Rio High School Rams player Nathan Molina. Molina is a pitcher for Big Bend.
Dunn said he would be arriving in Del Rio this evening and wanted to see Roosevelt Park, the one local baseball park large enough to host a professional baseball team, lit up to have a better idea of how the park would handle the league’s games.
He’ll meet with the Del Rio Chamber of Commerce’s sports committee Wednesday morning around 10 a.m. and will explain what is needed of the community to help facilitate the inaugural season of the Bombers.
If everything falls into place, Del Rio would be part of the Pecos Baseball League’s inaugural season in 2011.
The trip to Del Rio is part of a larger road trip for Dunn. He’ll also visit Alpine and Abilene, both towns that are slated to join the league and teams that with Del Rio would help form the East Division of the league.
