The day draws near for the next boxing event in Del Rio.
Saturday brings the Amistad Iron Fists Showdown, presented by Del Rio’s Box Scene Academy, at the Del Rio Civic Center. Bell time is scheduled for 7 p.m.
Established in 2012, Box Scene has been training local amateur boxers and competing in bouts around the state on a regular basis. Saturday’s event marks the fourth time they conduct an event in Del Rio.
Some of its more successful fighters include Salvador Castillo, who was a San Antonio Regional Golden Gloves finalist; DeAaron Alexander Jr., who was a San Antonio Regional Golden Gloves semi-finalist; Luis Homero Cadena, who was a San Antonio Regional Golden Gloves champion and a San Antonio Gloves champion; and Austin Benson, who was a San Antonio Gloves champion.
Twenty-two preliminary bouts were originally scheduled, featuring fighters ranging in age from 9 years old to 26 years old and in weight classes from 65 pounds to heavyweight-plus, but that amount could change due following this weekend’s weigh-ins.
The fights will range in time from three one-minute rounds to three three-minute rounds. The time is usually based on the ages of the fighters as younger fighters will fight in the one-minute rounds.
Most of the fighters taking part in the event will be from Del Rio but fans can also expect fighters from the panhandle region, San Antonio, Corpus Christi and the Rio Grande Valley. In addition, several of the local boxing clubs, including No Quit and the Coronado Boxing Club, are projected to feature fighters on the card.
This is a ticketed event. Tickets will be $10 for adults, $5 for children and all children 5 and under get in free. There will also be a concession stand and beer sales. The Box Scene Academy is also giving away tickets through its Facebook page www.facebook.com/boxsceneacademy/
