They came in a variety of sizes, but each of them packed a punch.
So went the fighters who took part in Saturday’s Amistad Iron Fists Showdown at the Del Rio Civic Center. Presented by Del Rio’s Box Scene Academy, and sanctioned by USA Boxing and the South Texas Amateur Boxing Association, the card featured 17 sanctioned bouts with fighters from across the state including Eagle Pass, Alpine, Corpus Christi and Del Rio.
Hundreds of people packed the civic center to witness the fights. Most of the group came to see fights from their respective clubs, whether it was the Coronado Boxing School, Eagle Pass YC, Alpine Boxing Club or others. Many more were fans of the sport.
At stake were bragging rights and title belts, though the fighters who didn’t get the win got to leave with a medal and a hug from their opponents. Sportsmanship was just as prevalent throughout the fights as the rapid-fire succession of punches.
The smallest fights kicked things off as Luis Rodriguez, from Coronado Boxing School, squared off against Diego Saldivar, from Eagle Pass YC, in the 65-pound weight class. For three, one-minute rounds, the two scrappers traded punches from bell to bell, neither fighter looking to give an inch.
In the end, Rodriguez won the bout by decision and was handed a new title belt from RING. He then took the runners-up medal and placed it around Saldivar’s next, finishing with a hug and some words of encouragement. The two fighters then made their way to ringside physician Dr. Noe Musquiz, who conducted a post-fight exam to ensure neither fighter needed any further medical attention.
That was kind of how the rest of the evening went. None of the fighters who took part suffered any major injuries and all left with some kind of token for their efforts.
Of course not every fighter had the fight they were expecting.
No Quit Boxing’s Catalino Solorzano was scheduled for a three-round bout against West Texas Knock Out’s Ismael Ramirez. It was Solorzano’s 10th career fight and he was confident it would end with his sixth win.
However, Solorzano gave up several inches in height to Ramirez and the taller fighter took advantage. He came out aggressive and peppered Solorzano with punches to the head and body. Despite not being knocked down, Solorzano’s night came to an early end in the second round when the referee stopped the fight after it was determined he could not defend himself. Solorzano was visibly upset afterwards, striking corners, but his coaches consoled the young fighter before he left the ring.
One of the more exciting bouts of the night pitted No Quit Boxing’s Andre Jimenez against Castillo’s Boxing Gym’s Marcus Johnson in the 186-pound senior division.
After an even first round, Johnson took control near the end of the second round and pressed the advantage in the third, eventually pounding Jimenez to take a knee in the corner. Jimenez was able to continue and the fight went all three-rounds, but Johnson won via unanimous decision.
This was the second fight between Jimenez and Johnson, but this time Johnson was able to show off his power.
“He wanted to trade, so I was ready to trade with him,” Johnson said. “I knew I had more power since I was used to training with heavier guys.”
The original main event was to feature Box Scene Academy heavyweight Austin Benson, but Benson’s opponent dropped out at the last minute. The former Del Rio Rams football standout said he was disappointed he wouldn’t get to fight in front of the home fans, but said he would focus his energy on getting ready to compete at USA Boxing’s Eastern Elite Qualifier and Regional Open Championships in October.
Benson’s No Quit teammate, and Rams soccer player, Andre Hernandez instead fought in the main event, defeating Hillcrest Boxing Club’s Luis Flores by decision.
