Donato B. Guajardo, Jr., was called by our Creator above on Sunday, December 2, 2018, to join the Lord’s Chorus of Heavenly Angels. Donnie was the eldest son of Donato B. Guajardo, Sr. and Ernestina Diaz Guajardo, and was born in Del Rio, Texas on February 14, 1950.
In 1970, Donnie married Bertha E. Maldonado, and together they raised four children, Donna Wene, Brenda Martinez, Don Guajardo, III, and Briana Ballenger. A devoted father, he taught his children how to be humble and grateful, not taking anything for granted. Donnie’s legacy will be continued through his adored grandchildren: Hannah and Sean Wene, Christian and Danielle Martinez and Isabella and Elena Ballenger. Mr. Guajardo is also survived by his sister Diane Martinez and his brother Ron Guajardo.
A graduate of San Antonio College and Sul Ross State University, Donnie worked alongside his father and mother in the family funeral business as a third-generation funeral director and mortician for over forty years. He was compassionate and caring about all the families he served in Del Rio, Uvalde, Brackettville and Lubbock during their hardest times in life.
Donnie taught his children to value life, to be humble and to give thanks to the Lord for everything. He understood that life is a gift and that each day should be taken one at a time with no rush. Mr. Guajardo loved telling jokes to everyone he encountered. A very grounded man, he loved smiling and laughing, and his joy came from serving the Lord and from serving others. Donnie was one of the biggest Del Rio Ram fans and never missed a home game. He loved watching the Rams and Queens in football, baseball, volleyball and the band. Other than his time at college Donnie lived his entire life in Del Rio.
Donnie was a talented singer with a beautiful voice as well as a musician who could play several instruments including the keyboard and saxophone. He enjoyed composing and recording numerous songs in his spare time. Donnie was a member of the San Felipe High School Band, and as an adult spent many years performing publicly in several bands as a lead singer and musician in Del Rio. In addition, Donnie was recognized with a special award as an accomplished musician by his peers. He always enjoyed sharing his love of music by introducing and sharing instruments with his nephews and grandchildren to help them develop their musical talents.
