The new solar-powered lights installed at Diablo East (photo) and Box Canyon will make it safer and easier for pedestrians to walk across the parking lot during the early morning and after sunset hours. Many tournament anglers access the lake before sunrise and come back in the late afternoon.

The National Park Service had new solar lights installed last week in the parking lot at Box Canyon and in the upper lot at Diablo East. There were three new lights installed at Box Canyon and 14 at Diablo East.

“This will provide lighting for boaters and fishermen who access those areas before sunrise and after sunset, and make it safer for pedestrian traffic,” said Amistad National Recreation Area Superintendent Chris Ryan.

Many tournament fishermen access the lake well before sunrise and these lights will make it easier and more efficient for them to park their vehicles and trailers in the designated parking spaces, he said.

“It will also increase the safety of pedestrians after they park their vehicles and for people driving into the parking lots,” Ryan said.

When recreational boaters arrive back after sunset, the lights will make it easier for them to see pedestrians, and to locate their vehicle and boat trailer quicker.

“Amistad National Recreation Area belongs to the American people and it is our intention to continue to make improvements in visitor services,” Ryan said.

The contractor for this project was All-Rite.
