A postal vehicle caught fire Friday afternoon when mail carrier Juan Beltran noticed a popping sound coming from the engine at the corner of 15th St. and Avenue Q.
Del Rio Fire and Rescue Department were dispatched to 505 Avenue Q but later located the fire at the corner of 15th St. and Avenue Q, Fire Department Lt. Cliff Hill said. The fire was reported to have started in the engine caused by an electrical arc. One engine company including four personnel and 560 gallons of water was needed to extinguish the car fire.
No injuries were reported during the incident. There was an estimated $20,000 in property loss and $5,000 in content loss. Damages of other property surrounding the postal vehicle remain unknown.
“The curbside mailbox by the vehicle may have been damaged, but I cannot confirm that,” Robert Bolen, communications programs specialist of the U.S. Postal Service, said.
“The mail carrier had 600 to 800 pieces of mail and 13 packages to deliver that day. By the time the fire occurred, he had 100 pieces left to deliver. The vehicle was a total loss.”
Residents can contact the local post office if they’re unsure whether their mail delivery may have been affected. The post office will be sending out notices if bills or other timely mail was affected.
