A joint effort between a local mother, a church, and the Tim Tebow Foundation will allow individuals with specials needs to enjoy an unforgettable event February 9 in Del Rio, as the Night to Shine, a nationwide prom night experience, will be held at the Del Rio Civic Center.

Event organizer Mary Hernandez said Night to Shine is a prom night experience for people with special needs ages 14 and older.

The event, which is centered on God’s love, will be celebrated simultaneously by hundreds of churches around the world, honoring guests through the support of thousands of volunteers, according to the foundation’s website.

Hernandez said the Night to Shine is a nonprofit event, there will be no charge, and is open for anyone with any kind special needs.

“I presented the project to my church, which is Hope City Church, the application was processed and approved by the Tim Tebow Foundation,” Hernandez said.

“We have a committee basically planning a prom, it is not just for high school, not for any individual group, it is a celebration of life,” she said.

She said the event will be open for individuals with any type of disability. “It could be someone in a wheelchair or any kind of disability,” she said.

This year the event will be celebrating its fifth edition, and will be held in Del Rio for the first time.

Hernandez acknowledged local businesses for their support to put the event together, and for allowing their staff to contribute many man-hours for the organization of Del Rio’s “Night to Shine.”

According to the foundation’s website the first Night to Shine was held in 2015, with 44 churches representing 26 states and three countries. Approximately 15,000 volunteers came together to honor the 7,000 guests

The event ballooned ever since reaching 537 churches from 33 different denominations in 49 states and 16 countries in 2018. Approximately 150,000 volunteers served and celebrated 90,000 honored guests with special needs last year.

The foundation provides host churches with a planning manual, guidance and mentorship, custom decorations including a red carpet, a backdrop, a welcome banner, a table runner and exclusive gifts for honored guests.

The foundation also provides special message cards for honored guests, access to exclusive Night to Shine online store and merchandise, discounted resources for background checks, crowns, tiaras, website templates and more, a prayer guide and video and conference call discussions with Tim Tebow.

Tebow, a former NFL quarterback and an outfielder in the New York Mets, played college football for the University of Florida, winning the Heisman Trophy in 2007.

Tebow was selected by the Denver Broncos in the first round of the 2010 NFL Draft and spent two seasons with the team. He also played for the New York Jets in 2012. Additionally, he had preseason stints with the New England Patriots and the Philadelphia Eagles in 2013 and 2015 respectively.

The Tim Tebow Foundation contributed more than $3.5 million to the worldwide movement of Night to Shine last year, according the foundation’s website.
