Sheanne Geis was crowned Miss Del Rio 2016-2017, and Samantha Catherine Keaton was crowned Miss Del Rio Teen 2016-2017 during the annual Miss Del Rio Pageant Saturday night.
Several hundred Del Rioans attended the event, packing the historic Paul Poag Theatre downtown. The event, produced by the International Good Neighbor Council (IGNC) – Del Rio Chapter, is the traditional kickoff for October’s Fiesta De Amistad celebration, a series of festivities designed to observe and honor the friendship between the citizens of Del Rio and Ciudad Acuña, Coah., Mexico.
“It’s funny, because I always dreamed when I was little of being crowned Miss Del Rio one day, and so competing here was nerve-wracking, because I wanted to win so badly. Feeling that crown being placed on my head was amazing,” Geis said just after she received her crown from 2015-2016 Miss Del Rio Cristina Ziegler.
Geis, 18, is a freshman in college and the daughter of Pamela and Ray Geis. Geis is working toward a degree in communications and hopes to work in the media one day.
“I was definitely shocked,” an obviously elated Keaton said shortly after her crowning. “I was among so many beautiful girls, and I am so happy to be the new Miss Del Rio Teen. I know it’s going to be a great year.”
Keaton, 15, is the daughter of Catherine and Michael Keaton. She currently is a sophomore at Del Rio High School, where she is a varsity cheerleader. Keaton said she hopes to attend Texas Tech after graduation and aspires to go to medical school to become a plastic surgeon.
Other awards presented during the pageant included the Award of Merit for exemplary sportsmanship, which was presented to Jaclyn Adams; the Freeze Window Modeling Award, presented to Elizabeth Pendergrass, for a window modeling show at the Bridal Galleria.
Pendergrass also won the Fan Favorite Award, which was presented to the contestant who received the most $1 votes on the night of the pageant.
Keaton won the swimsuit, evening gown and Miss Photogenic awards in the teen division of the pageant, and Alejandra Torres won the Miss Congeniality Award in the teen division. Pendergrass was named the first runner-up in the teen division of the pageant.
In the miss division of the pageant, Geis won the swimsuit and evening gown awards, and Amanda Marie Castro won the Miss Congeniality Award and was named the second runner-up. Adams was named Miss Photogenic and first runner-up in the miss division.
Television personality Chris Saldana of Austin served as the master of ceremonies for the event, and members of the Del Rio High School Dance Company provided entertainment throughout the evening.
