After walking away from an accident near Rotary Park, a Del Rio man was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated first offense, a Class B misdemeanor, and leaving the scene of an accident involving injury, an offense punishable with up to five years in jail and fine up to $5,000.
Julio Gallardo Ponce, 52, a resident of the 600 block of West Garza Street, was arrested on May 26, at 11:35 p.m., at the 400 block of Cantu Street.
A Del Rio Police Department report states Officer Jorge Aguirre was patrolling Rotary Park on Cisneros Street when he observed an accident that had just occurred at the intersection of Cisneros and Cantu.
According to the report, witnesses advised Aguirre the driver of one of the vehicles involved in the accident took off walking toward Casa de la Cultura. The driver was identified as Gallardo.
The report states Gallardo had bloodshot eyes, slurred speech and a strong odor of alcoholic beverages emitting from his breath.
The driver of the other vehicle was transported to Val Verde Regional Medical Center.
Ponce was arrested and charged with driving while intoxicated, and leaving the scene of an accident involving injury.
He was transported to the police station for booking and processing.
