Del Rioans respond to citywide cleanup

Gatti’s employee Sean McGillicuddy and Fernando Valenzuela unload yard waste into a collection container.

Del Rioans disposed of several tons of garbage Saturday, during a city-wide cleanup effort.

Red River Waste Solutions, Del Rio’s garbage disposal provider, received tons of rubbish, including bicycles, couches, yard waste and scrap wood between 9 a.m. and 1 p.m. at the Del Rio Civic Center, 1915 Veterans Blvd., said Red River Regional Manager Robert Montes.

“As long as we’re getting the trash out from where it was, it’s all good,” said Montes, a 10-year Red River employee.

The city hosted an earlier clean-up in April, when the community unloaded 44 tons of garbage between two collection sites, the civic center and the Joe Ramos Community Center, 1105 W. De La Rosa St., Montes said.

“This is the first time we only did one site,” Montes said. “So we knew it was going to be busy.”

Red River had nine containers and 10 employees on site to assist with collection, Montes said.

Items disposed during the collection were brought to the city’s landfill, Montes said.

Red River employees only accepted drop-offs from Del Rio citizens and residents of Val Verde County communities like Val Verde Park, Cienegas, Lakeridge, Quail Run, and Los Campos.

Items including tires, car batteries, paints, automotive liquids, air conditioning unit, refrigerators, televisions and any items with circuit boards are not accepted during city-wide cleanup events.
