Young future performers concluded a three-day dance camp Wednesday night, joining one of Del Rio’s most cherished dance traditions while performing for their parents.
Members of the Queen City Belles held their annual kiddie dance camp from Monday to Wednesday, teaching 132 girls between the ages of 3 and 12-years-old the basics of dance and drill techniques.
“These little girls look up the Belles and they know that,” said Belles booster club president Ronnie Zambrano. “They are held to a higher standard than a lot of the athletes. Because of that we’re extremely proud of them.”
Belles coaches Stephanie Cohen and Kayla Lopez Rodriguez led the camp with the help of Belles captain Symantha Cardenas, a Del Rio High School senior. The girls dressed in colorful 80s apparel while performing to Cyndi Lauper’s anthem, “Girls Just Want to Have Fun.”
The dance team celebrated its 46th anniversary this year in May with a proclamation from City of Del Rio Mayor Bruno “Ralphy” Lozano. Sixty-two girls made the team this year out of about 90 girls who tried out. The team includes co-captains Emmalee Diaz and Alyssa Gallegos and lieutenants Reianna Flores, Norely Faz, Lizette Torres, Kassandra Garza, America Vera and Audrey Vela.
The Belles will perform with the kiddie camp participants at the community pep rally at 7 p.m. Aug. 22 at Walter Levermann Stadium.
