DAM ROAD CLOSURE

The Amistad Dam Road at the United States Port of Entry near Del Rio will be closed all day until Aug. 18 due to heavy duty equipment on the dam for maintenance work. Amistad Dam Road is scheduled to reopen on Sunday, Aug. 19, at 10 a.m.

TEACHER APPRECIATION BREAKFAST

Border Federal Credit Union’s Teacher Appreciation Breakfast and $500 Grant Giveaway takes place Friday from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. at 2211 N. Bedell Ave. This is open to all teachers, faculty and administration in Crockett, Edwards, Kinney, Sutton, Terrell and Val Verde counties.

BACK TO SCHOOL CUTS

M Club Barber and Beauty, along with UGK Barbershop of Eagle Pass and Focus Zone Barbershop, will perform economical haircuts for all students beginning Saturday at 9:30 a.m. There will also be a $5 for future service, a free burger meal and chances to win backpacks and school supplies provided by our shops and donors.

RIBBON CUTTING

Val Verde Regional Medical Center will host a ribbon cutting for the HOPE Cancer Resource Room. This will take place Aug. 20 at noon in front of the resource room near the old hospital entrance. Reception to follow.

NUTCRACKER AUDITIONS

Auditions for this year’s performance of “The Nutcracker” will be held at the Firehouse, 120 E. Garfield, Aug. 24 and Aug. 25. Youth ages 11 and up can audition Aug. 24 between 4:30 and 7 p.m. Youth ages 3 to 6 can audition Aug. 25 between 9 and 10:30 a.m. Youth ages 7 to 10 can audition Aug. 25 between 10:30 a.m. and noon. FREE CLASS

Val Verde Regional Medical Center’s Cardiac Rehab nurse is offering a free class to the public. “High Blood Pressure and Weight Control” will take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Aug. 24  in VVRMC’s Memorial Board Room.  The class is being taught by Melinda Martinez, RN. Last Chance Forever, presented by The Bird of Prey Conservancy, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez Jr. Amphitheater, 1105 W. De La Rosa St. This is a free program. It is an educational opportunity to learn more about birds of prey and the role they play in the environment.

Tractor Supply in Del Rio is looking for local vendors to participate in its fall Farmers Market event Saturday, Sept. 22. FREE SPANISH LANGUAGE CLASS

Val Verde Regional Medical Center is offering a FREE, Spanish language Diabetes Self-Management Course. There are 6 consecutive evenings of class from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at VVRMC, 801 N. Bedell, in the Education Conference Room at the old main entrance. Classes begin on Tuesday, Sept. 25 and end on Tuesday, Oct. 30. This course provides everything you need to help people get control of your health. Everyone is welcome. You must pre-register by calling 830-778-3652.

BUSINESS SHOWCASE

The Del Rio Chamber of Commerce presents the annual Business Showcase. This year’s theme is “It’s a Jungle Out There!” The event will be held at the Del Rio Civic Center Thursday, Sept. 27, from noon to 5 p.m., and is free to the public. The Business After Hours Mixer will follow from 5 to 7 p.m.
