The Friends of the Val Verde County Library will hold their monthly business meeting Aug. 23 from noon to 1 p.m. in the Multipurpose Room at the Val Verde County Library.

FLOOD OF 98 REMEMBRANCE

There will be a 20th anniversary candlelight vigil to commemorate the Flood of ‘98 Thursday from 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at Brown Plaza, 305 Cantu St. There will be video, displays. testimonials and a candlelight vigil with the reading of the names of flood victims.

NUTCRACKER AUDITIONS

Auditions for this year’s performance of “The Nutcracker” will be held at the Firehouse, 120 E. Garfield, Aug. 24 and Aug. 25. Youth ages 11 and up can audition Aug. 24 between 4:30 and 7 p.m. Youth ages 3 to 6 can audition Aug. 25 between 9 and 10:30 a.m. Youth ages 7 to 10 can audition Aug. 25 between 10:30 a.m. and noon. FREE CLASS

Val Verde Regional Medical Center’s Cardiac Rehab nurse is offering a free class to the public. “High Blood Pressure and Weight Control” will take place from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Aug. 24 in VVRMC’s Memorial Board Room. The American G.I. Forum that was to be held Aug. 19 ha sbeen changed to Aug. 26 at 7 p.m. at the American G.I. Forum Hall.

The final Movie at the Museum event will be held Friday, Aug. 31, at the Whitehead Memorial Museum, 1308 S. Main St., from 8:45 p.m. to 10:45 p.m. The final movie will be “The Emoji Movie.” Free admission, but a concession stand will be available. Bring your own seats.

Last Chance Forever, presented by The Bird of Prey Conservancy, will be held Tuesday, Sept. 18, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., at the Dr. Alfredo Gutierrez Jr. Amphitheater, 1105 W. De La Rosa St. This is a free program. It is an educational opportunity to learn more about birds of prey and the role they play in the environment.

FREE SPANISH LANGUAGE CLASS

Val Verde Regional Medical Center is offering a FREE, Spanish language Diabetes Self-Management Course. There are 6 consecutive evenings of class from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at VVRMC, 801 N. Bedell, in the Education Conference Room at the old main entrance. Classes begin on Tuesday, Sept. 25 and end on Tuesday, Oct. 30. The Del Rio Chamber of Commerce presents the annual Business Showcase. This year’s theme is “It’s a Jungle Out There!” The event will be held at the Del Rio Civic Center Thursday, Sept. 27, from noon to 5 p.m., and is free to the public. The Business After Hours Mixer will follow from 5 to 7 p.m.

VETERANS APPRECIATION

There will be an event to recognize veterans and their family members. An appreciative luncheon, with door prizes, will be held Saturday, Oct. 27, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., at the VFW, 1307 E. 1st St. This event is sponsored by the Lions Clubs and all veterans organizations.
